Our History

Angus Lea Golf Course was built in the early 1960’s by Ruth and Ed Bedell. Originally, back in the 1950’s, the land was used to raise Black Angus cows by the Bedell’s, not to be slaughtered but just for pets. Hence the name Angus Lea; lea is a Scottish word for meadow.

The course opened in 1964 and was owned by the Bedell’s until 1970, when it was bought by A. Russell and Nancy Niven. From 1970 to the present the course has been owned and operated by the Niven family. Russ and Nancy’s son, Curtis, grew up working on the course. He graduated with a degree in turf management from the University of Massachusetts, and started his career as a superintendent at the Duxbury Yatch Club in Massachusetts, and then at Arcola Country Club in New Jersey. Starting in 1992, Curtis and Linda Niven operated Angus Lea Golf Course then took ownership in the spring of 1995. Angus Lea Golf Course continues to be a family run golf course, with their son working there too.
